FAQ's

What kind of dance shoes do I wear for WCS? (for girls)
1. The black shoe is called a "practice latin" shoe and it is made by Supadance, which is what everyone used to wear for WCS up until last year. If you wear pants or jeans, these shoes look fine. If you wear white/light coloured pants, you might want to have the same model in a beige colour.

2. The beige shoe is a low-heel strappy sandal also
made by Supadance. This is a trend that started last year and now most women wear this shoe exclusively (in any colour). It has a low heel which is great for balance and control and comfort: unlike a pump, you can dance in these all night long and feel fine. It is shankless, which makes it feel like a jazz shoe: you can feel the floor really well. The strappy open-toe look lends itself to wearing long shorts, shirts, or gaucho pants in summer, but also looks cute with pants.

Where can I get music to practice to?
Check out our Music Page for some of the top WCS songs being played nationwide. In your own music collection, look for songs that are in 4/4 time, between 80 and 130 bpm. After that, the genre, era, and artist is up to you!

Why is it easy to dance with advanced dancers but not with beginners?
10% of the time its your partner but the other 90% of the time, it's because of you! Advanced dancers are not only experts at dancing with other advanced dancers they are experts at leading/following beginners as well. Ever notice that teachers still look like teachers even while dancing with beginner students? That is the mark of a true advanced dancer.

I learned WCS in a ballroom studio and there seem to be many differences?
Ballroom WCS to authentic WCS isn't too hard, there's just alot of habits to change. WCS has evolved so much over the past 15 years and the ballroom dance community has not kept up with those trends. Take what you already know, stay open minded and you will be great!

What makes advanced dancers look so good?
In rare cases, natural talent, but for most of us the formula is great instruction and plenty of "dance time." The more time you spend dancing in lessons, dances or practice the more quickly the process will take place.

Why do classes teach patterns while some dancers seem to just 'go with the music?'
You have to know the rules before you can bend or break them. First you have to really understand the patterns you are dancing....then you will be free to improvise while still maintaining the structure of the dance. This is where the realy fun and musicality of west coast swing comes in to play. Be patient and have fun!
